Casa delle Bottere is a private house designed by that British architect and designer John Pawson.
The main building, surrounded by a large botanical garden with a swimming pool and an annexe, consists of a single floor which blends seamlessly with the natural environment. Pawson has drawn on Palladio’s and Carlo Scarpa’s tradition by designing a minimalist building over a rigid symmetrical plan and by selecting a limited number of materials like pietra serena stone for the floor and white concrete for the roof.
Casa delle Bottere, built by CEV operating as general contractor, can be considered as one of Italy’s best examples of sustainable homebuilding. The elegant and austere interior hides a large and complex service engineering system. Shafts run from the electrical and mechanical centres positioned in the basement and are distributed throughout the house, extending to the second building, called the Gate House, whose roof has been covered with photovoltaic panels. Eight geothermal wells located south of the main building provide ideal ambient temperature and energy saving throughout the year. The use of renewable energy sources, strategic selection of suitable materials and the architectural and structural characteristics of the building are qualities that have enabled Casa delle Bottere to be awarded the CasaClima Oro certification (namely “zero-consumption house”) by the Agenzia CasaClima, a most sought-after and highly respected qualification given to fewer than 100 houses in Italy.
